Hey guys, I'm contemplating driving out to standing rock sometime in the next few weeks, but the car I'm thinking about buying is only front wheel drive (opposed to 4 wheel drive). Can anyone tell me if a front wheel drive Toyota Venza will make it to standing rock from Chicago? And would anyone be interested in joining me?

Hi Mari, I know nothing about cars so I can't help you with that but two of us are driving up there on 11/29. Let me know if you would like to caravan.

Hello Mari,
I am a 53 year old mom and Air Force vet, planning on flying into Chicago on December 3rd (early morning to mid afternoon most likely arrival) to join the veteran's protest at Standing Rock. I need to be there on the 4th. I could help pay for gas. When are you leaving?

Also, I am flying in from Ecuador and plan on staying a week. Could you give me specifics of your planned leaving date and stay time also and if this might work out for us both? Thank you.

Wow Caroline! Thank you for coming over! I don't think I can be ready in time to get you there by the 4th, (I am still in the process of buying the car), but if there is any other way I can help you, please let me know. I appreciate so much you coming over for this. Which day do you arrive in Chicago?

HI Brian, Ciara and Maggie,
I am still not sure which day I can head out. So lets keep in touch and I will let everyone know with as much notice possible about which day I am able to leave.
PS: Tomorrow seems to be a big day of solidarity, has anyone heard of anything (peaceful protest) happening in the Chicago area?

Mari, you also need to think about accommodations. if a few of us go, maybe we can split the cost of a hotel. We are also responsible for our foods as well.

Thats a good idea Maggie. Yes, not only do we need to bring our own food but we need to bring enough food to share with others. I spoke to a native american elder yesterday and he informed me that there are loads of well-meaning people coming to standing rock to help, but they are actually a drain instead because they are eating food meant for people who are already there and who are on the front lines. The more supplies we can take the better. I was considering getting a sub zero tent and sleeping bag, but I am very sensitive to the cold at the best of times, so not sure that would work very well for me. But splitting a hotel room sounds more comfortable, even if a bunch of us were on sleeping bags on the floor.

Hey all!
I am from Michigan but I thought I would hop on a few local threads to try and see if I can arrange getting supplies to someone. Long story short- we were supposed to leave dec 3rd (it is recommended that you be there before the 5th by natives at camp--- it is highly likely you may not be able to get in after that) one of our group bailed at the last minute and then we found out we would need a 4WD vehicle to get there. That was going to be too much cost wise to afford for just three people so the other two backed out. One found a ride with another lady in the UP and the other woman just is not going at all. The lady that is still going is a native and is traveling with one of her elders and has additionally 1. already been there and 2. is in constant contact with family there. She said don't bother going with out AWD. You will make it to north Dakota but getting in and out of camp is impossible due to mud-trenches (that now have snow added to them) that were created by heavy rain before it snowed. You will get stuck she said and will create more issues for others. So make sure you have 4-wheel drive before you go. She also recommended sleeping in a car or tipi as most tents were being blown over by heavy winds (she said even some tipi's were down) as far as best vehicles to sleep in- she said mini-vans are the best but if you can't get an AWD mini-van try to get a jeep. Just info from a native herself --- trying to help. As i mentioned before.. I have many donations and supplies that could be of value to you all on your trip there and well as others there so let me know if I can connect with anyone to drop off supplies!

Mari, Also looking to leave for SR, after Dec 7. I'm in MI but can get to Chi to link up. I have gas and food money, am licensed to drive, have a group to link up with on site, and am fully-winterized (snow boots, 4-layer system, sub-zero bag, etc.).

Hi Mari & others on thread,
I am ALSO looking to go to Standing Rock asap, will be ready to leave by Dec. 8th. I can easily get to Chicago by the morning or afternoon of Thurs the 8th. Of course looking to contribute in all of the ways -- gas $ , extra supplies, food, etc. However i can not necessarily help with driving.
Would be down to pool resources to rent an AWD vehicle or whatever might be needed to get us there.
