I'm looking for a ride to and from Standing Rock around 5-15 December. Is anyone going that way during that time?

Hi Lori! My friend and I are headed around that time. We were thinking the 4th - 13th. Our plans are still up in the air as we just started planning tonight but currently looking for van or rv to borrow, or maybe if there are a few of us we can rent something? We are in Detroit.

Hi Mandy, That sounds good. I am in Grand Rapids, but can meet you somewhere. I have to take a look at my calendar when I get back home. Are you on Facebook? I am on there a lot. This weekend, I am going out to get needed supplies for self sufficiency. There is someone else I know who lives in the Detroit area that is looking to go around the same time too. Lori

Hi Lori,
Yes my name is Mandy Davenport.
That is what I'm doing now, looking for cold weather gear. I was thinking about going to some Army Navy stores around here for wool blankets and see what they have for sleeping bags.
Do you have any thoughts on vehicle? Neither of us can take our own cars, but renting something and splitting I think would work for us?
Where are you sleeping when you get there? I've read you need to bring your own housing. There are also hotels and airbnb's around.
Mandy

I just read this - "I was gently reminded that many traditionals simply wouldn’t accept blankets from a white man, as the bio-terrorism of our shared history is still remembered quite clearly." I was thinking about bringing surplus blankets for them but maybe not. upliftconnect.com/12-ways-standing-rock/

Hello you two! My name in Libby (originally from Ann Arbor but am currently in the Kalamazoo area. I have been looking for a few individuals to link up with from the Michigan area as well in the next few weeks and stumbled upon you ladies giving this all a talk. If you have room for one more I would be more than thrilled to accompany you! I could take my car however it is on the smaller side so I had also toyed with the idea of renting an RV as well especially since I don't have a 'winter weather' tent. But if not, I am currently looking into acquiring one of those.

Hey Libby! I'm looking right now at costs of 15 passenger vans ($750/9 days) but everything is still in the planning process now. We don't have a winter tent or gear yet either, but looking at Airbnb's or maybe even could sleep in large van? We are in Detroit and may pick someone up in Traverse City. Are you on Facebook?

That sounds super cool do-able! I had thought the same thing about sleeping in a large van. If possible- I would really like to stay at camp in a van/bus/tent/rv or whatever so I would personally be more interested in that than an airbnb but at the same time i am flexible and down for whatever! As for my location- I have no issue driving to the east side of the state and meeting you all over there some where. I am on facebook!

Yes, staying on the reservation sounds easier and we can be more involved as well. My friend Emily and I are in Detroit and are 100% able to leave on Dec 4th and I am speaking with a lady in Traverse City now. She can meet us in Gaylord. I was thinking of traveling through the UP because we've never been, and stopping at Pictured Rocks along the way. I am willing to reserve a rental car/van/minivan once we get a small group confirmed. We can drive out as many as possible, but ideally only 3-5 of us could sleep in the van. The lady in TC was there before, and says it's really windy and a mini van may be better. We will still need sub zero sleeping bags, foam mat and an car friendly indoor heater, but it will still be cheaper then hotel. Additionally, we can leave items with the reservation when we leave, if wanted. They are in need she said. My last name is Davenport if you want to find me on Facebook

do you live in toledo ohio? I don't think I can find you... But yes i was planning on leaving my items there! I know they need sleeping bags and stuff etc so i planned on filling up the rest of the car room with donations and take mostly things that we can leave there. That sounds good to me though! there is an EMT that just posted in a seperate posting on here that is in ann arbor and trying to find a group of people to go with... so that would be 5 if i asked her?

What is your last name? I will look for you. Yes 5 would be great! The more the merrier cost wise for getting there, but just have to make sure we can all sleep in van. I bet we can sleep on floor between seats on foam mattress too?
